Pink eye, also known as conjunctivitis, happens when the eye swells, itches, burns, and the whites of the eye become red. Conjunctivitis is an incredibly common infection that is spread from contact with an infected person. Pink eye can be caused by a bacterial or viral infection, allergy, environmental irritants, contact lens products, eye drops, or eye ointments.

Pink eye is usually painless. However, it’s best to consult with an eye doctor to determine which form of conjunctivitis you have so that proper treatment can happen. Treatments will work to ease symptoms and prevent the spread of the infection to other people. If treatment is delayed, the infection could get worse. There’s a potential for the infection to even cause corneal inflammation and vision loss.
